Preparing for a Disaster

Bt Gary Robertson, PV Emergency Management Coordinator (267-0336)

In Point Venture, we are subject to a wide range of weather related disasters. The following precautions are suggested to help each of us prepare for and survive these unanticipated events:

Secure Important Papers

bulletMake a home inventory list and take photos or a video for your insurance records.
bulletCheck your homeowner's insurance policy for flood coverage, if needed.
bulletMake sure all policies, medical history and property inventory are up to date.
bulletMake copies of important papers including identification, insurance policies, property inventory and medical information.
bulletLocate one set of important papers away from home and the other in your disaster supplies kit.
bulletPut maps you'll need for your evacuation plan in the disaster supply kit.

Prepare a Personal Evacuation Plan

bulletIdentify ahead of time where you could go if you were told to evacuate. Choose several places such as a friend's home in another town, a motel or a shelter.
bulletKeep handy the telephone numbers of these places as well as a road map of your locality. You may need to take alternative or unfamiliar routes if major roads are closed or clogged.
bulletTune in to your NOAA weather radio and to local news and weather for evacuation instructions. If advised to evacuate, do so immediately.

Assemble a basic Disaster Supplies Kit that includes:

bulletBaby formula powder (if necessary) and disposable diapers
